Overview

The position functions as a full-stack internal specialist to the USTA Professional Tennis organization to define their business needs, translate those needs to technical analytic specifications, and then provide solutions, typically by customizing available package software, coordinating custom development performed by external or internal resources, and/or developing departmental applications using rapid development tools. Data analysis, data visualization, and sports analytics is a key focus of this position.  This position is designated as "hybrid/flex".

Responsibilities

Business Analysis

  • Lead cross-functional projects using advanced data modeling and analysis techniques to discover insights that will guide strategic decisions and uncover optimization opportunities across business and sports verticals such as US Open ticketing, merchandising, player operations, and USTA Player Development and Officiating.
  • Build, develop and maintain data models, reporting systems, data automation systems, dashboards and performance metrics support that support key business decisions.
  • Examine, interpret and report results of analytical initiatives to stakeholders in senior leadership, technology, sales, marketing and product teams.

Business & Sports Data Analytics

  • Utilize data analysis and interpretation methods to provide an objective perspective to scouting and player development. Activities include: acquiring in-depth knowledge of various tennis match-data components that feed into such products, developing & publishing analytical products conforming to the internal clients’ requirements through cycles of prototyping and conducting on-site staff training and support for all specialized analytical applications.
  • Implement and enhance complex, scalable data processing pipelines into various data stores including AWS S3 and a PostgreSQL data warehouse with a focus on parsing, cleaning, managing, and analyzing large data sets that produce valuable business insights and discoveries.
  • Oversee the design and delivery of reports and insights that analyze business functions and key operations and performance metrics.
  • Examine, interpret and report results of analytical initiatives to stakeholders in the USTA performance management group and affiliated coaches.

General

  • Manage and optimize processes for data intake, validation, mining and engineering as well as modeling, visualization and communication deliverables.
  • Organize and drive successful completion of data insight initiatives through effective management of analyst and data employees and effective collaboration with stakeholders.Communicate results and business impacts of insight initiatives to stakeholders within and outside of the company.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required preferably in Computer Science. Master’s degree in Information Science or Statistics preferred.
  • 2-5 years of experience in data analytics, data engineering or business/data intelligence roles
  • Significant statistics and data analysis skills and experience is required. Background with data visualization tools specifically Tableau), scripting languages (such as Python, R), and databases (Microsoft SQL Server, Amazon Aurora) is preferred.
  • A sophisticated knowledge of competitive tennis is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of data mining principles: predictive analytics, mapping, collecting data from multiple data systems on premises and cloud-based data sources.
  • Strong SQL skills, ability to perform effective querying involving multiple tables and subqueries, and setting up data models for incorporating new data sources.
  • Experience and knowledge of statistical modeling techniques: GLM multiple regression, logistic regression, log-linear regression, variable selection, etc.
  • Understanding of and experience using analytical concepts and statistical techniques: hypothesis development, designing tests/experiments, analyzing data, drawing conclusions, and developing actionable recommendations for business units.
  • Possess the skills needed to work in a matrix organization environment including the ability to work independently to meet the local needs of Professional Tennis while meeting the standards of the USTA IT Department.
  • Approaching tasks with a “can do” attitude, making each client feel that their needs are your sole focus, and creating opportunities for additional assignments through relationships built on a track record of delivering results.
